The holidays may be over but winter definitely isn’t. Cold weather can bring changes in our skin like dryness, uneven texture, redness, increased sensitivity and irritation. To ensure our skin stays protected, nourished and moisturized, we have to do more than simply layering on thicker creams.
The biggest mistake I see people make during the colder months is not maintaining a regular exfoliation routine. But why is it so important? Like I mentioned before, during colder weather it’s normal for our skin to be drier. As this dry skin accumulates, it forms a layer that often results in flaking/rough texture/etc. When this happens, people usually think more moisturizer/thicker moisturizer/applying more frequently is the solution. However, if that layer of dry skin isn’t regularly removed, no moisturizer will be able to absorb properly because it’s being blocked by dead skin. But with regular exfoliation, that problem is resolved and whatever moisturizer you’re using will be able to effectively nourish the skin.
This brings us to the next question-how and how often should I be exfoliating? Especially when it’s colder and your skin is more vulnerable, you never want to overdo it with exfoliation. I love the simplicity of using one SISH treatment each week because it removes dead skin buildup without compromising my skin’s protective barrier. If you opt for a chemical exfoliant, I’d recommend mandelic or lactic acid. Both of these acids are generally gentler and help with hydration.
Now that your skin will be properly primed to receive nourishment and hydration, here’s a list of key ingredients to look out for in your winter weather moisturizers/serums/oils/etc:
-
Ceramides
-
Squalane
-
Hyaluronic Acid
-
Glycerin
-
Vitamin E
-
Rosehip Oil
-
Jojoba Oil
