Does Oily Skin Age Better?

Does Oily Skin Age Better?

Oily skin can come with a whole host of not-so-pleasant side effects like breakouts, shininess, larger pores and makeup that doesn’t want to stay. So is there a silver lining to having oily skin? Well the good news is, yes! Oily skin does (tend) to age better than drier skin types.

Here are a few reasons why oilier skin can delay the signs of aging longer:

  1. Skin tends to be thicker–Skin is separated into three layers–the top epidermis, middle dermis, and bottom hypodermis. Oilier skin types have a thicker dermis layer because it has a higher density of oil glands. This thickness acts as a natural cushion which makes the skin less likely to show fine lines. The dermis is also where collagen and elastin are stored. Having a thicker dermis slows the breakdown of collagen which helps skin look plumper for a longer period of time.
  2. Oil acts as a natural moisturizer–Although all skin types need to be moisturized (including oily skin), oily skin retains moisture better and provides a continuous supply, which reduces the appearance of fine lines. As we age our bodies produce less and less oil, so having oilier skin does help combat signs of aging associated with less moisture and drier skin.
  3. Oil acts as a natural shield–In addition to providing moisture, oil also provides an extra layer of defense against aggressors like UV exposure, pollutants, irritants and debris. Although sun protection and other protective measures are still always necessary, the oil makes skin less vulnerable to environmental aggressors.
  4. Oil has antioxidant properties–Oil has antioxidant properties because it contains Vitamin E. Antioxidants prevent free radical damage from things like UV exposure and environmental stressors. Less free radical damage=less signs of aging.

Although oily skin can help delay the aging process, it still requires proper care and a healthy lifestyle in order to do so. Proper sun protection, moisture and exfoliation are key requirements to ensuring the optimal health and appearance of oily skin.
